Hugh Anderson, part of the WCS team, has spent since October trialling in hope of racing for his country. After a year and a half of hard training in his single, and a not very promising result in the first set of trials, Hugh took part in bumps last year and found he was a sweepoarsman rather than a sculler. After training with pairs partner James Powell, who rows for Bedford Modern School, the pair came 12th in the second set of trials. Invited to the spring assessments, Hugh finished in twelth place on strokeside. Despite a weaker performance then the previous trials, the pair made it to finals, which meant time for seat racing with Hugh finishing in the middle of the group winning himself a place in the 8 and coxed 4 on the Coupe team.
After intense training, including 38k paddles, Hugh got two gold medals on the first day of racing, one in the 4+ and one in the 8+, and a bronze medal in the 4+ on the second day along with another gold in the 8+.
Well done Hugh, a brilliant result!
